  • X Solidaster
  • Sonchus

    (Sow thistle)
    Compositae

    • canariensis   CAG02541

      (Giant sow thistle,Tree dandelion)
      CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE

Seuss-like, with bold, plumed rosettes of dark green, skeletal, pinnate leaves on stiff bare branches. Showy, and incongruous to the uninitiated, branched scapes of bright yellow daisy flowers burst forth in spring.

Summer dormant and impervious to heat and drought, though possibly sensitive to heavy frost. At home in poor, alkaline, well drained soil, wet feet are tolerated poorly.

The perfect compliment to other similar Canary Island plants, Echium, Euphorbia atropurpea, E. characias, E. dendroides, E. lambii, Geranium maderense for a climatically appropriate "tropical" garden.

  • Tagetes
  • Thalictrum
    • flavum subsp. glaucum   CAG00632
      CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE

The large mounds of steely blue, fern-like foliage, of this clump forming, winter dormant perennial, are an exceptional foil for bold flowers such as Hemerocallis, Canna and Kniphofia, and are the perfect companion for the purple leaves of Eucomis ‘Oakhurst‘ and Clematis recta ‘Purpurea’.
Luscious, fat shoots of purple tinted new leaves in spring and explosions of sulphur yellow flowers in mid summer, make this North African native yet more garden worthy.

  • Tithonia
    • diversifolia   CAG00634
      Tithonia diversifolia
      CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE

A large evergreen shrub. Dark green, large, deeply divided leaves in pairs on erect, hollow, woody stems. During autumn and winter, bright, golden yellow, honey scented, sunflowers are produced in profusion. Cut back hard in late winter, continued light pruning will keep it smaller and more compact. Pruning after february will affect flowering.

  • Verbascum

    (Mulleins)
    Scrophulariaceae

    • creticum   CAG01015
      Verbascum creticum
      CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE

An unusual, annual Verbascum, from the island of Crete, as the specific epithet implies. The plant initially consists of a quick growing rosette, upto 40cm across, of somewhat glaucous, wavy margined, highly textured, arrow shape leaves. At any time, from spring through to autumn, tall spires, bearing five petalled flowers, the largest we have seen on any Verbascum, are produced. Each flower is neatly divided in half, the top being custard yellow, the bottom half paler cream, the upper petals in addition, carry a pair of large burgundy eyes, that appear to be stenciled on.
Should self seed in well drained soil.
      Very tough.

  • Zephyranthes
    • flavissima   CAG00745
      CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE

A South American species that multiplies quickly, forming dense clumps of grass-like, yellowy green, strappy leaves, emerging from shallow bulbs and bearing in spring and autumn, small, bright yellow, crocus-like flowers. Essentially evergreen.

A great for filler for potted shrubs or trees, naturalising in turf or as a showy alternative to, or mixed with, Ophiopogon planted between pavers.

Easily grown in any soil with at least some summer moisture, extended periods of neglect are survived though not enjoyed. Very tolerant of clay and wet feet.
