A tuberous rooted, winter dormant perennial. Sturdy rod-like stems emerge in mid-spring to be sparsely clothed with large, deeply lobed, maple-like leaves and carry branches of giant, 18cm, widely open, 5 petalled, scarlet flowers.
Can be grown in shallow water, 5cm deep, as an unusual and spectacular pond plant, or in any sunny position that stays constantly moist.
Cut to the ground in winter or leave the corky stems and accompanying seed pods as a seasonal sculpture.
An exotic looking, yet remarkably easy to grow plant, that those who like giant perennials, can never get enough of.
A clumping evergreen perennial. Dense clumps of hairy, mid-green, deeply toothed leaves. Slender branching stems arise during Spring,Summer and Autumn, bearing pincushion-like flowers of an unusual magenta-burgundy colour. A delightful little plant that is totally unique. Remove spent stems to promote flowering.
Satiny, saucer shaped flowers of glowing ruby, with a blood red centre, wave on fine leafy stems throughout spring until the heat of summer. Seemingly delicate, this North African annual prefers exposure and poor, hopefully alkaline, well drained soil but will grow just about anywhere that is not shaded, the flowers only open in direct sunlight.
My favourite winter annual, it never fails to impress with a depth of colour seldom matched and is lusted after by all who see it it in the nursery.
Press seeds on to lightly raked bare soil, do not cover (they need light to germinate), where they are to grow in autumn or early winter. Will self sow in light soils but will probably need the assistance of a light raking with the first rains in heavier soil.
Each pack contains in excess of 50+ seeds.
A stunning perennial groundcover now extinct in its native home the Canary Islands. The soft, trailing mat of whorled, grey-green linear leaves smothers in fiery clusters of red and orange beak-like flowers throughout spring.
A quick growing, nitrogen fixing legume, traditionally regarded as a potted annual. In our ideal climate it also a hardy groundcover for well drained, sunny sites and is at its best in alkaline sand. Simulate its natural habitat by draping it down a limestone retaining wall or cliff, or just mass it for unbridled colour.
Somewhat deciduous over summer, when over watering usually proves fatal. Frost tender. Easily propagated by cuttings.
The annual Flanders poppy needs little introduction. Great satiny swathes of blood red poppies appear wherever sown and reappear forever more after any disturbance to the soil.
With a predilection for well drained, alkaline soil, in full sun and exposure, it will none the less grow anywhere except the shadiest, most sodden of sites.
Scratch seeds into bare soil during autumn or winter.
Each pack contains a garden colonising 50+ seeds.
A clumping perennial. Loose rosettes of glossy blue-green spoon shaped leaves form low compact clumps. In spring and again in autumn, tall open spires of pale red, tubular, pendant flowers, arise from the centre of each rosette. A splendid and resilient perennial fora sunny garden. Cut back stems when finished.
A medium, evergreen shrub. Mid to light green, softly haired leaves are paired along erect stems. From early Summer through to Winter, tight clusters of small, star shaped, bright scarlet flowers are produced. Prune regularly and remove spent flower heads to promote flowering. The toughest Pentas in our conditions. Protect from frost. Attracts butterflies.
