  • Erigeron
  • Eriogonum
    • arborescens   CAG02925

      (Santa Cruz Island buckwheat)
      CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE

A dome of fine silvery grey rosettes bearing flattish heads of palest pink flowers that darken to burnt sienna and last until stripped by winter rain. From the Channel Islands off California and revelling in coastal conditions and hot dry summers.

Offers great potential for avant-garde designs with earth toned pottery or paving, or brightly coloured glass forms and background walls for more modernity.

For any well drained soil though the leaner the better. Tolerant of some irrigation but less so with increasing temps.

Questionable in eastern states and definitely not for the tropics.

    • grande var. rubescens   CAG02374

(Red buckwheat, San Miguel Island buckwheat)
      CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE

Rosettes of small, dark green, lightly felted, white backed, paddle-like leaves neatly cushion and bear profusely, branching clusters of tiny, long lasting, rich rosy pink flowers to the adoration of nectar feeding insects.

Just as hardy as the other Californian Buckwheats despite appearing more like a delicate denizen of cool climate cottage gardens. Plant with other sumptuous dry lovers, e.g. Echinops, Iris albicans, Nepeta, or even other Eriogonium for a more relaxing climate wise equivalent or just mass plant for eye popping colour. Could be great in car park islands, low growing, low maintenance, long lived and no retic wrangling required.

For any lean, well drained soil with as little summer water as possible. Thrives on coastal sands.

An annual removal of spent flowerheads when they eventually become unattractive, either before or after they develop their characteristic aging rustiness, allowing continued enjoyment of debonair form and foliage.

  • Escallonia
  • Filipendula
  • Gaura
    • lindheimeri Pink   CAG00251
      CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE

A tough, hardy, clumping perennial, for full sun. One of the easiest plants to grow. Mounds of narrow, spotted, red to green leaves produce, throughout the warmer months, tall wands of lipstick pink, butterfly shaped flowers that sway in the slightest breeze.
After flowering, or any time it's in need of a clean up, cut back to ground level. It will quickly regrow.

An etremely tough plant tolerating all sorts of physical abuse (eg. being driven over, mowed, poisoned etc.) as well as complete summer dryness.
Generally self seeds where happy, so cut back before seed fall if you find this undesirable.

  • Gazania
    • ‘Rose Queen’   CAG00253
      CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE

A hardy, clumping, evergreen perennial tolerant of dry conditions. Narrow, dark green, glossy, divided leaves are produced in dense tufts, though it's larger, more graceful plant than the naturalised type. Throughout the warmer months, large (12cm), deep rosy-pink, daisy-like flowers are produced freely on slender stems.
      Best planted in groups.
A very tough plant for well drained soil.

  • Geranium
    • x antipodeum ‘Pink Spice’   CAG02670
      Geranium x antipodeum ‘Pink Spice’
      CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE

A mouth watering confection forming a low, dense, evergreen mound of scalloped, satin sheened leaves of dark, rosy chocolate, lightly frosted with soft sugary pink, saucer shaped flowers. At it's best in a well drained, sheltered but sunny position where it will not only prove long lived but improve with age.

Perfectly tolerant of heat and short periods of dryness, more than can be said for most of the more desirable Cranesbills.

    • x antipodeum ‘Sea Spray’   CAG01313
      CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE

A flat ground covering variety grown mainly for its beautiful satiny foliage which is round, scalloped and an unusual greenish bronze. As a garnish, trailing sprays of small, rounded, pale pink, five petalled flowers carry on through most of the warmer months.

From New Zealand and Chatham Island stock it is evergreen and less shade loving than most of the European species and is easily grown in moist soil with good drainage, even in a pot.

An annual removal of old flowering stems is all the attention required.

    • x cantabrigiense ‘Cambridge’   CAG02127
      Geranium x cantabrigiense ‘Cambridge’
      CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE

A blue based pink flowered variety of this dependable, southern European Cranesbill. Neat, slowly spreading mounds of semi-gloss, rounded, deeply divided, fresh green, spicily scented leaves bear an abundance of slightly reflexed, saucer shaped blooms for an extended period as the weather warms.

Almost evergreen in warmer areas otherwise winter dormant. Divides readily for cost effective bulk planting but as with most Cranesbills, and other perennials, a year or twos establishment is generally required before they shine.

For any reasonably drained soil in a sheltered site. Tolerant of only short periods of dryness.

A delight in drifts through a woodland with different coloured G. macrorrhizum cultivars for variations on a theme.
