I'll start by quoting Robert Nold in Penstemons "one of the glories of the plant kingdom"
An evergreen clump forming perennial, adapted to life in the harsh conditions of the North American south west. Found in impoverished, dry, clay soils it should prove a winner in WA, it's deep roots effectively drought proofing it. During summer, highly fragrant, pink, balloon-like flowers crowd one side of the tall slender stems, the bases of which are clothed with large, toothed, silver-blue leaves.
You need this in your garden.
From Turkey and Eastern Europe comes this surreal, biennial member of the carrot family.
Silvery-blue mounds of lacy foliage throw up fat, branching stems of creamy-white umbels followed by the unavoidable death of the plant but no loss, as providing there is good drainage and a sunny exposed position, a healthy crop of seedlings should appear the following Winter.
Tolerant of dry, stony and poor soils this plant is astounding in scattered drifts with winter bulbs, Catmints, Lambs ears, Anthemis or any other tough low growing plants.
It shouldn't need saying but just in case. Intolerant of shade and much summer moisture.
The large mounds of steely blue, fern-like foliage, of this clump forming, winter dormant perennial, are an exceptional foil for bold flowers such as Hemerocallis, Canna and Kniphofia, and are the perfect companion for the purple leaves of Eucomis ‘Oakhurst‘ and Clematis recta ‘Purpurea’.
Luscious, fat shoots of purple tinted new leaves in spring and explosions of sulphur yellow flowers in mid summer, make this North African native yet more garden worthy.
