  • Mentha
    • longifolia   CAG00478

      (Horse mint, Lavender mint)
      Mentha longifolia
      $12.00earn 60 points

An upright perennial forming a drift of softly silver foliage, branching into spires of small silver-lavender flowers by summer. A gentle mint fragrance but the leaves are perhaps a little too tough for much culinary use.

From northern Africa, heat tolerant and not moisture demanding it is one of the rare summer perennials viable in a mediterranean climate, with some summer watering. Slowly spreading, forming matrices with suitable companions and provides some winter structure while dormant.
Easly grown in any sunny soil and remarkably dry tolerant, though performance is limited without adequate moisture. Cut to ground before new growth arises in late winter.

  • Miscanthus

    (Silvergrass, Eulalia grass)
    Poaceae

    • ’Purpurascens‘   CAG02326
      $12.00earn 60 points

Perhaps offering the best seasonal colour of any grass, luminous fiery tones in autumn become bright russet and curling in winter all while topped with the fluffy cream seedheads.
Not to be confused M. sinensis, M. ‘Purpurascens’ is a slow spreader which lends it to mass planting in either natural or formal designs where its soft non-cutting foliage and small stature allows its use even beside paths.

    • sinensis ‘Variegatus’   CAG00484
      Miscanthus sinensis ‘Variegatus’
      $12.00earn 60 points

Big, bold and bountiful. A lush broad leafed variety, highly variegated and softly weeping, for making a statement, as a illuminated backdrop for saturated colours or as a dominant feature in the white garden. Its lax habit makes it appear much more natural than many variegated plants, though it is very bright it can be used to great effect in naturalistic and informal designs. Feathery fawn plumes typical of the species are produced in summer for even more impact.

A warm season grass (C4), densely clump forming and almost evergreen in Perth, it should nonetheless be cut down to ground level in winter for a fresh new season start. The same can be done during the growing season, if flowers are not required, for a more compact appearance.

Easily grown in any moist soil, loves summer heat.
