  • Brillantaisia

    Acanthaceae

    • ulugurica   CAG00573
      CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE

A bold, moisture loving perennial from tropical east Africa that makes a large stand of erect, square stems with alternate pairs of large, corrugated leaves and topped with airy racemes of bright blue-lavender, hooded and lipped flowers.
Stunning when well grown and very salviaesque.

Best grown in a sheltered site (localized humidity) with rich, moist, well drained soil but very durable to all but frost which even then it will usually come back from, insulating the base with a loose straw mulch might make the difference in the coldest areas, otherwise a cutting in the kitchen window makes good insurance.

Prune as necessary when in active growth.

  • Buddleja
    • alternifolia   CAG00726
      CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE

A medium, weeping, winter deciduous shrub. The slender, arching branches are clothed in small, alternating, dark green, lance shaped foliage. In spring, on the previous years growth, clusters of small, lilac, richly perfumed flowers, encircle the branches along their length. Prune after flowering if necessary. Makes one of the most splendid standards.

    • davidii ‘Black Knight’   CAG00141
      CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE

A hardy, quick growing, evergreen, butterfly attracting shrub, with pairs of white backed, lance shaped leaves clothing the woody stems. Dense, conical sprays of small, tubular, four petalled flowers of the deepest blue purple.
Trim lightly after each flush of flowers or it can be pruned back to ground level while in active growth to encourage vigorous new basal shoots.

      One of the choicer cultivars.

    • salviifolia   CAG00789
      CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE

An attractive evergreen shrub. A quick grower with highly appealing arrow shaped, sage green, silver backed leaves paired along stiff, erect woody stems. Short, branching spikes of tightly packed, tubular, smoky lavender flowers are produced in abundance during spring.
      Prune as required after flowering.
      Butterfly attracting.

An excellent Buddleja most valued for it's winter flowering season.

  • Campanula

    (Bellflowers)
    Campanulaceae

    • rapunculoides   CAG00157
      Campanula rapunculoides
      CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE

A clump forming, evergreen, perennial. Rosettes of long(15cm), arrow shaped, serrated edged leaves, spread by runners to form small patches(1m). During the warmer months tall(1m) spikes of pendant, blue-lavender, bell shaped flowers are produced. One of the hardiest and best Campanulas in our condition's. Requires lime.

    • trachelium   CAG00952

(Nettle leaved bellflower, Bats in the belfry)
      CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE

A perennial clumping species, non running, from Europe and Northern Africa and one of the most reliable in warmer climates. Tall, one sided spires of nodding, soft purple, bell shaped flowers tower above a clump of soft, roughly textured, narrowly heart shaped, dark green leaves that are deciduous in winter.

Soft and romantic especially when nestled beside your favourite garden sculpture or scattered beside a secluded path.

Easy in a sheltered but not too shady spot, morning sun would be ideal, with reasonably drained, preferably alkaline, soil where some drying out after flowering will be appreciated.

  • Centaurea
    • cineraria   CAG00715

      (Dusty miller)
      Centaurea cineraria
      CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE

A too rarely encountered perennial from coastal Italian cliffs, often confused with the yellow flowered Jacobaea maritima or other species, and still one of the best plants I have ever had the privilege to grow and one whose more common use can only benefit our gardens.

Tufts of softly pinnate leaves cut from white suede form a shrubby mound, bearing fine, branching, white stems of lilac coloured, thistle like flowers. A florists dream. Used to great effect in mass planting or as common foil for formal or informal gardens, beside driveways or in moon gardens as reflective lighting, or just as an exceptional component amongst other well defined mediterranean type plants.

If its leggy, flops in the heat or is short lived then conditions are too soft, it has no adaptations to shade. At its best in exposed sites with freely draining, lean, alkaline soil, gardeners on the coastal plain should have no difficulty. Summer irrigation is mostly detrimental. A good test, quick and easy to grow but the standard and longevity of this plant will directly reflect your understanding of gardening for a mediterannean climate.

A good annual or biannual cut back, when and where strong new shoots are seen, will keep it looking tip top for many years. Don't cut it down to bare stems, without leaves it may starve to death before it can regenerate.

    • montana   CAG01914

  • Cleome
    • hassleriana   CAG00179

      (Spider flower)

      SEEDS

A large and glorious, long blooming, summer growing annual from southern South America. Forming a stiffly branched open shrub, with large, hairy, palmate leaves and bearing all summer and autumn whorls of pink, purple or white, four petalled flowers with long extending stamens, spidery in effect.

Sow just below the surface in any well drained sunny soil in late winter or early spring while temperatures are still fluctuating but the danger of frost has passed (oscillating temperatures are needed for germination). Alternatively they can be started off in small pots, from which they transplant very well when young.

Will self sow in bare well drained soil.

Each pack contains in excess of 50+ seeds.

  • Collinsia
    • heterophylla   CAG02464

      (Chinese houses)
      CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE
      SEEDS

A Californian annual of remarkable and unusual beauty. Whorls of bi-tone, purple and white, lupin-like flowers are tiered on slender stems, narrowing towards the top, pagoda style. They are borne in great abundance on delicate plants with small triangular leaves.

One of the few winter annuals that prefers a lightly shaded position, where they will flower longest, though they grow happily in full sun as well.

Scratch into bare, well drained soil in autumn or early winter where they should self sow the following year.

Excellent in a pot, especially when combined with other Californian annuals.

Each pack contains, at the bare minimum, 50+ seeds.
