Tiny little scalloped, softly haired, heart shaped, ground hugging leaves emerge from slowly spreading underground stolons. Pure white, 2cm long, tubular, lipped flowers are produced throughout the warmer months and occasionally through Winter.
Provided good drainage it makes a delightful ground cover among rocks or possibly the cutest pot specimen ever. You could even try planting it with the bright lavender and slightly larger S. indica var. parvifolia.
A true garden treasure from the coastlines of Europe.
From a flat carpet of waxy, blue green, spoon shaped leaves grow impossibly large, fully double, pure white flowers, strongly perfumed with a beautiful sweet musk, weighing down slender stems to hang gracefully or lie face up on the ground.
At it's best with plenty of sun in lean, preferably alkaline, well drained soil where it can drape over walls, across paths or between rocks with the addition of a few small Dianthus for a water efficient rock garden.
Flattest, dark green groundcover, forming a durable mat between stones or spaced paving, as a lawn or simple topping around a large potted specimen. Round clusters of bright pink flowers are a further delight for a long period over winter and spring. It tastes good too.
A few smaller, choice mediterranean bulbs protruding through its expanse could constitute a garden in entirety.
Well drained soil and sun are all that is required for this classic garden favourite. Self sows usefully in unplantable places.
Trailing, jointed stems are furnished with glossy, mid green, broadly lance shaped leaves, irregularly spotted with darker green spots which no doubt gave rise to the common name of Toad lily. Furthering the toad-like resemblance the orchid like white flowers, held in airy panicles, are heavily spotted in dark plum.
Semi-evergreen, dying down after flowering while next seasons growth is already sprouting.
Spreading by stolons to form dense colonies this Taiwanese forest dweller makes sensational ground cover for moist shade. Plant with the equally vigorous and simultaneously flowering Anemone x hybrida ‘Honorine Jobert’ for one of the finest autumnal displays your ever likely to see in a shady garden, as well as providing the ultimate weed suppressing ground cover.
If your going to waste water on tender woodlanders this is the only Tricyrtis that contends well with our heat, the others whilst all beautiful during spring, invariable only make it through summer looking battle scarred and sad by flowering time.
Singularly outstanding.
From a dense mat of dark green, hairy, scalloped leaves on slender, rooting stems, is borne, throughout the warmer months, an endless profusion of stunningly vibrant, purple blooms in circular clusters.
The hybrid Verbena to which all others fail to measure up. It's vigour and propensity for producing new buds in each flower cluster, greatly extending its lifespan, make it one of the highest performance perennials in any garden. Dig bits up in early spring and plant them everywhere.
Remove spent stems in autumn to make way for the robust winter and spring vegetative growth from which next seasons flowering growth will extend.
Relatively tolerant of dry conditions but needs a modicum of summer water to flower well. For best performance avoid thick layers of mulch which prevent new root production from the trailing stems.
A reliable variety with large heads of pure white flowers on trailing stems clothed in hairy light green leaves.
As with all ground covering Verbena the stems need to root into light well drained soil as they grow which increases their vigour and flowering power.
